For evidence of the truly awkward relationship we have with our fathers, just visit a greeting card aisle in June, when the heartfelt messages we send Mom have vanished, replaced by Dad Cards.
The cute kid with the glasses from Jerry Maguire is all grown up – and he's got a very special Father's Day tribute for his on-screen father figure, Tom Cruise. Jonathan Lipnicki, who played Renée Zellweger's human encyclopedia of a son in the 1996 film, is participating in Screen Junkies' "Dads of Our Lives Series" – a tongue-in-cheek satire in which former child actors wish their movie dads happy Father's Day.
I know there are lots of guys like me that don’t really need another tie (or any ties for that matter) or an oversized, stainless steel gas grill for Fathers Day. With that in mind, I’ve pulled together a Father’s Day gift wish list that ranges from all sorts of stylish stuff that anyone can afford, to much more exotic items that lots of guys (not just Dads) would kill to just get a ride on.
A heart-tugging new ad from Angel Soft has an unexpected twist: In the two-minute commercial, grown children wish a happy Father's Day to the single moms who raised them. Unsurprisingly, most of the men and women tear up as they recount growing up with moms who handled it all, from putting food on the table to fixing the car.
Dad has excellent taste. He did, after all, have a hand in making us. But, we admit, shopping for the old man can be tricky. While you don't want to repeat gift him with a boring striped tie (or some other equally cliché gift) like you did last Father's Day, you didn't inherit his innate ability to navigate the men's department.
