Why the Miss Universe Pageant doesn't make a lick of sense

I know that this circus has been going on since before the dawn of time, but I still can't get past the naming of the pageant. Vapid, crocodile tears aside, to say that one person is the prettiest, most idealistic human being in the UNIVERSE, is pretty ridiculous. I know that the naming leans more toward the tongue-and-cheek side of things. And no, I'm not going to argue for the recognition and rights of possible aliens in another galaxy because they aren't getting any street cred. But, in a way, it is very much like the MLB World Series. Yeah, they call it that, but I don't see teams from Japan (which is, believe it or not, a country that is very big into baseball) being called up to the states to slug it out with the best of them. I guess it's the bombastic nature behind the name rubs me the wrong way. Am I blowing this out of proportion?

Princess syndrome. Girl's wanna be the prettiest girl in all of the whole universe!

I should say *some girls* want that. That's implied, right?
