A long time alternative radio station here in Dallas was just cancelled for good, 102.1 The Edge. If you have lived in the metroplex for any amount of time, I'm sure you are aware. If not, this station did great things for the 'all things alternative' music scene for many decades. Shaped my music playlists and interest in my early teens for sure.
I credit them for introducing me to System of a Down, Tool, Jack Johnson, Disturbed, Linkin Park, The Avalanches.. the list could go on for a while. I will admit that with the advent of Spotify, Pandora, etc that terrestrial radio has taken a serious hit. And I understand why regular radio is failing, all over the country. So it's closing wasn't entirely surprising to me.
Even still. The point of this post is bitch a bit about the money grab that is playing Christmas music non-stop, starting the day after Thanksgiving. I can only stomach Xmas music in small doses a few days surrounding Christmas. And even then, I roll my eyes. But to have over a month dedicated to music you would NEVER listen to if it 'wasn't the season' is ridiculous. It's obvious what the radio execs are doing. Lazy, lazy programming, aimed at only making money.
Anyone else have a once beloved local station of theirs turned into a money grab like this? Wonder what the former Edge will be come January 1st. Probably yet another top 40 auto play station. As if we need another one of those...
