Grammys Didn't Completely Miss the Mark for 2019

I usually dislike the Grammys. Kind of sucks as I'm a huge music fan. But I have very much disagreed with who has been nominated outside of a few exceptions the last 10 years or so. And it felt like it just kept getting worse. Especially with who wins. Feels way more like a straight up popularity contest than rewarding the most artistic musicians or bands.

Anyways, I'm still of that mindset. But I am happy to report that 2019's winners weren't terrible!

I'm sure not everyone will be on board with me on this, but I think 'This is America' was actually one of the best songs from 2018. For a ton of reasons. I'm a big fan of Childish Gambino and Donald Glover projects in general. So when I saw that video I was hooked. Granted its not the greatest song ever without the accompanying video. But it's still up there for me.

Brings me to Kacey Musgraves winning Best Album. I haven't listened to it, yet. But was actually close to queuing it up on Spotify because two different people I trust told me its a really good album. So happy and a bit surprised to see her win.

And then Beck winning best Alt Music Album. Colors was good. Solid. Not what I would have chosen. But Im a big fan of Beck and enjoy seeing him get props.

So those are a handful of the biggest awards of the night and I can't complain. Hopefully next year follows suit.

What did you think of the night in general? Feel any obvious snubs or surprises?

It was just alright. I'd much rather the Grammys introduce me to really good music that goes under the top 40 pop chart radar. That hasn't been the case for many years though. We already have the Billboard Awards.. the Grammys needs to rethink their strategy.

It's something I appreciate about the Oscars actually. Every year at least 1-3 films gets on my radar because of the nominees list. Films that I wouldn't have probably watched otherwise that are actually pretty good to great get seen. Wish I could say the same about the Grammys.

Yes! Kacey Musgraves. I saw her just randomly on the CMAs this year singing 'Slow Burn'. I was hooked. She's so deserving of accolades. Her and Childish Gambino both are such unique and talented artists. It's good to see deserving artists actually win a music award amongst the political junk awards ceremonies pull.
